On April 28, the Mid-Atlantic Carwash Association membership meeting in Chesapeake Beach, MD hosted the 5th Annual Trendsetter Awards Banquet. The Chesapeake Beach Hotel, on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay made a perfect backdrop for a fun-filled and informative evening, from the Maryland crab cake dinner to the amazing view of the Chesapeake Bay, the setting was Maryland at its best.
The winners of the Trendsetter Awards for 2010 announced that evening include: Trendsetter Person: Mike Horn, Safetvyer, for innovation in conveyor belt technology; Trendsetter Product: POD, by Tommy Car Wash Systems, represented by Ryan Essenburg. POD was selected for the award because it redefines the configuration of the carwash, replacing the back room with a micro-brewery feel.
Both Mike Horn and Ryan Essenburg gave presentations on the role of innovation in their companies. Horn used the event to introduce a new product-- a conveyor belt that can sit directly on a paved surface. Essenburg provided insights into the mind of Tom Essenburg, the genus behind many of the Tommy Carwash Innovations.
The Trendsetter Person is John Shullman of Express Car Wash in Boca Raton, FL. Shullman was unable to attend, due to being in the midst of opening a new wash. Shullman has developed a computerized monitoring system that allows him to adjust staffing levels to meet demand.
The Trend of the Year is Remote Real Time Monitoring. MCA was introduced to the concept at its March meeting in a presentation by Jimmy Belanger of CMI.
